Standout Features in This Aging-in-Place Kitchen
A beautiful custom WNC kitchen proves that planning for the future doesn’t mean compromising on style. Just ask Elizabeth and Harlan Smith, who built their forever home with help from Scroggs Construction Services, a trusted custom home builder serving Asheville and Western North Carolina.
Retiring to the mountains, the couple wanted a space that felt both high-end and highly livable—something that would support their lifestyle now and well into the future. They partnered with our Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) design-build team to bring that vision to life.
“We are delighted with the craftsmanship in our new home,” Elizabeth says. “There were no shortcuts taken to get the job done quicker or cheaper at the expense of quality.”
Elizabeth and Harlan’s kitchen, recently featured on Carolina Home + Garden’s website, is a prime example of how thoughtful design can blend form and function. If you’re considering an aging-in-place remodel or new construction in Asheville, here are a few standout features worth bookmarking:

Accessibility Features We Love
Wide, Wheelchair-Friendly Walkways
Wide walkways around the island make it easy to navigate the kitchen, whether you’re using a wheelchair, a walker, or just juggling a load of groceries.
“Since this would be their forever home, incorporating aging-in-place features was essential,” says Kevin Griffin, vice president of operations at Scroggs.
Ergonomic Appliance Placement
In this kitchen, the microwave and double ovens were installed at easy-to-reach heights, taking the strain out of everyday meal prep.
“Our certified design team worked closely with the homeowners to integrate Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist principles that would support both comfort and mobility over time,” Kevin notes.
Joint-Friendly Fixtures
This kitchen is also packed with features that are easy on the joints. Lever-style handles, pull-out drawers, and touch-control faucets make daily tasks easier without sacrificing style.
“Together, these elements create a kitchen environment that is practical and well-suited to aging in place,” says Alicia Presnell, lead interior designer at Scroggs and a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist.

Design Details That Elevate the Space
Custom Cabinetry With Classic Appeal
This kitchen isn’t just about function—it’s also a showcase of thoughtful, timeless design.
The Scroggs team partnered with International Cabinetry in Hendersonville to craft custom units with full-access storage and soft-close drawers. Finished in Sherwin-Williams’ “Pearl Gray,” the cabinetry offers a soft, refined look, accented by oil-rubbed bronze hardware.
Mountain-Inspired Finishes
From the soft green “Cottage Jade” backsplash (WNC Tile, Asheville) to the quartz countertops (RockStar Marble & Granite, Fletcher), every surface echoes the mountain landscape.
“Earth-toned tile was thoughtfully chosen to reflect the textures and tones of the natural environment, providing both visual warmth and a tactile connection to place,” Presnell explains.
Lighting That Lets the Views Shine
Fir rafter ties house integrated track lighting, while hand-blown pendants from Bicycle Glass Co. (Saint Paul, Minnesota) cast a gentle glow over the island. It’s a lighting scheme that enhances the space without competing with sweeping views of Mount Mitchell.
“The result,” Presnell says, “is a cohesive, grounded design that honors the home’s setting while supporting the practical needs of daily living.”
