Built Over Time: 10 Lessons From a Decade of Scroggs Construction

Jul 15, 2026 | Tips

Ten years ago, Matt and Nick Scroggs founded Scroggs Construction Services with a simple goal: do good work, treat people well, and build a company their Western North Carolina neighbors could trust.

What began as a small remodeling company has since grown into a full-service design-build firm serving homeowners across the region.

“A lot has changed in 10 years,” says co-owner Nick Scroggs. “But the core of what we do has stayed the same. We want to build things the right way, take care of people, and be a company our community can count on.”

Here are 10 lessons the Scroggs team has learned over the past decade.

1. Bringing design and construction together leads to a smoother process.

Planning a remodel or custom home involves a lot of moving parts, from choosing plumbing fixtures and ordering countertops to completing a soil report and securing permits.

That’s one reason why Scroggs has embraced the design-build model. Instead of asking homeowners to coordinate separate architects, designers, and contractors, the company brings planning, design, pre-construction, and construction together under one roof. This approach keeps communication clear, timelines on track, and the client’s vision front and center every step of the way.

2. Good trade partners make better projects possible.

Every successful home remodel or custom build depends on a network of skilled professionals, from carpenters and plumbers to HVAC technicians and engineers. Each brings knowledge and experience that helps turn plans into a finished home.

Over the past decade, Scroggs has nurtured strong relationships with trusted local trade partners, suppliers, and specialists who share the company’s commitment to quality work and clear communication. These partnerships help Scroggs deliver a better finished product for every client.

3. As a company grows, its systems must grow, too.

In the early days of Scroggs, many project details lived in a few people’s heads. But as the company added team members and took on more complex work, it needed clearer systems for estimating, scheduling, job-site documentation, and client communication.

Today, Scroggs uses Buildertrend, a construction project management platform, to keep project information organized and accessible. Team members can track decisions, schedules, updates, and progress in one place, while clients have a clear view of what is happening throughout their project.

“Growth has meant finding better ways to keep everyone connected,” Nick says. “When the team has clear information, we can spend less time tracking down details and more time moving the project forward.”

4. Experience matters when the unexpected happens.

Every construction project has a few surprises. A product may arrive late, weather may disrupt the schedule, or an inspection may reveal an issue that was not visible before work began.

Those setbacks can affect the timeline or budget, but they are part of the construction process, especially in remodels. Older homes can hold decades of repairs, additions, and hidden conditions that only come to light once walls are opened up or work gets underway.

That is where experience matters. Scroggs knows how to assess an issue quickly, determine who needs to be involved, and explain the options in clear, practical terms. Whether the solution involves adjusting the schedule, revisiting a selection, or bringing in a trusted trade partner, the Scroggs team helps homeowners understand the path forward before making the next decision.

5. Every decision should make life easier for the homeowner.

Building or remodeling a home comes with hundreds of decisions, from selecting floor plans and finishes to choosing cabinetry, lighting, paint colors, and hardware. Over the past decade, Scroggs has learned that homeowners don’t need more options—they need the right guidance.

Rather than leaving clients to sort through endless products and design choices on their own, the Scroggs team works to simplify the process. By listening carefully and curating selections based on each homeowner’s style, budget, and goals, the team helps clients make confident decisions without feeling overwhelmed.

6. A clear budget starts with an honest conversation.

Budget shapes nearly every part of a remodel or custom home, from the size of an addition to the finishes and features that make it into the final design.

Over the past decade, Scroggs has learned that the best budget conversations happen early. Before construction begins, homeowners need a realistic picture of what their priorities will cost, where they have room to adjust, and how their choices may affect the overall investment.

Scroggs also offers two pricing structures, giving clients options based on how much budget certainty and flexibility they want throughout the project. A fixed-price contract establishes the construction price before work begins, while a cost-plus structure provides a clearer view of actual costs and more flexibility as the project takes shape.

7. The best homes are designed to work for the long haul.

A remodel or custom home is often planned around how a family lives today, but the most thoughtful projects also leave room for how those needs may change over time.

That can be as simple as adding a primary bedroom on the main level, choosing wider doorways, or replacing a traditional shower with a curbless one. These features make a home easier and more comfortable to use now while giving homeowners more flexibility in the years ahead.

Scroggs has a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist on staff to help clients explore options that support long-term comfort without sacrificing style or personality.

8. Building well also means giving back.

Scroggs has completed hundreds of projects across Western North Carolina over the past decade. But success is about more than the work completed. It is also about using the team’s skills to give back to the community.

This spring, that meant helping the Veterans Healing Farm in Mills River build a covered outdoor stage for concerts, workshops, ceremonies, and gatherings.

Scroggs designed and built the 26-by-16-foot amphitheater-style stage in a matter of weeks, then returned with employees and family members for a volunteer workday to complete additional improvements around the farm.

“When we have the chance to put our skills to work for a good cause, we want to show up,” Nick says.

9. A stronger building community benefits everyone.

Builders, trade partners, suppliers, and industry organizations all help homeowners move projects forward.

That was especially clear after Hurricane Helene. As president of the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Nick saw members share updates, coordinate resources, and connect homeowners with reliable local help.

The experience reinforced a simple lesson: collaboration across the building industry gives homeowners a stronger network to rely on when they need it most.

“The hurricane showed us how much stronger we are when we act together,” Nick says. “When builders, vendors, and trades support one another, the whole community is better for it.”

10. The work matters because home matters.

Construction is about more than lumber, tile, paint colors, and punch lists. It is about the life that happens after the crews leave.

Every decision, detail, and conversation during a project helps shape a space where people will celebrate holidays, weather hard days, raise children, host friends, and build a life. When homeowners feel cared for throughout that process, they remember it long after the project is complete.

That trust has become one of Scroggs’ greatest measures of success. Over the past two years, nearly half of the company’s projects have come from referrals and repeat clients, a reflection of the relationships it has built one home at a time.

“For 10 years, we have had the privilege of helping people create spaces for their everyday lives,” Nick says. “We are thankful for the trust our clients have placed in us and look forward to serving this community for many years to come.”
