The Laurel of Asheville recently sat down with our co-owner, Nick Scroggs, for its “On a Personal Note” series, a monthly spotlight on local leaders making a difference in the community.
Here are some highlights from the article:
Nick got his start in construction the old-fashioned way: doing grunt work.
Nick’s dad, Matt Scroggs, was a full-time firefighter in Swannanoa who remodeled homes on the side. Growing up, Nick spent many summers helping his dad, helping on such tasks as removing insulation from dirty, 100-degree basements.
“I did a lot of grunt work growing up, and if you do enough of that, you don’t really want to do it anymore,” Nick tells The Laurel of Asheville. “So, I thought, ‘I’m going to move to Chicago, get a degree in finance, and work in a high-rise.’”
After graduating from Owen High School, Nick moved to the Windy City and earned a degree from Roosevelt University, followed by an MBA from Dominican University.
Nick was on track to climb the corporate ladder, but fate works in funny ways.
In 2016, Matt called Nick and explained that his remodeling venture was growing, and he needed a business-savvy partner.
“It wasn’t really my path to make it back into construction,” Nick admits. “But as a kid, I don’t think I realized how many different opportunities exist in this industry. It took growing up and getting my MBA to see how much room there is for growth.”
Together, Nick and Matt co-founded Scroggs Construction Services and began building a company that combined thoughtful planning with quality craftsmanship.
When disaster struck, Nick and his team stepped up.
After Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina last fall, Nick and his team turned the company office into a supply hub, delivering essentials to hard-hit communities.
Nick also brought on more than a dozen new employees and launched a dedicated restoration division. Since then, the team has taken on 40-plus storm-related rebuilds, helping neighbors get back on their feet.
Outside the jobsite, Nick continues to lead. In 2025, Nick served as president of the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains (BABRM). He’s a vocal advocate for workforce development, expanded housing options, and quality building practices across the region.
“Nick will carry my legacy on while building his own extraordinary legacy,” Matt says of his son. “I’m sure of that.”
