Hurricane Helene recovery is a long road for many Western North Carolina homeowners, and the aftermath is still unfolding. Earlier that year, the Asheville Citizen-Times highlighted what recovery looked like on the ground, including Scroggs client Kelly Minear and the work to return her home to a safe, livable condition.
During the storm, Kelly’s Arden home took a direct hit from a massive white oak. “It felt like a bomb went off … And then the ceiling started breaking apart over my head,” Kelly told the Citizen-Times. “And then water started dumping on my face.”
The damage was catastrophic. Her home’s value dropped by more than 80% overnight. In the months to follow, Kelly found herself navigating the emotional toll of the devastation alongside the overwhelming logistics of rebuilding.

Finding the right contractor proved especially difficult. Kelly wasn’t just looking for someone who could do the job—she was looking for someone who would do it right.
“I want my house built the way it’s supposed to be. And a lot of new houses are built in a particular way—kind of cookie cutter,” Kelly said. “That’s great for a lot of people, but that’s not what I want.”
Kelly also had to stay vigilant against predatory contractors. At one point, she was approached by an out-of-town builder with a steep estimate and aggressive sales tactics. He even placed a dumpster and a porta-potty in her yard before she’d signed a contract. Something “just didn’t feel right,” Kelly said.
Fortunately, Kelly walked away and called us.
Since then, we’ve been working closely with Kelly to bring her childhood home back to life. While there’s still some way to go, she’s thankful to have a crew she can count on.
