Scroggs Construction Services Brings Home Two Statewide STARS Awards

Sep 17, 2026 | Tips

A good remodel changes the way a home looks and functions. A great one changes the way a family lives.

That was true of two recent Scroggs projects, both of which earned statewide recognition at the 2026 North Carolina Home Builders Association STARS Awards on Aug. 31 in Charlotte. The annual program honors outstanding work by homebuilding professionals across North Carolina in remodeling, custom home construction, design, and other areas of the industry.

Scroggs received Best Whole Home Remodel Under $250,000 for “Restoring Home, Restoring Hope” and Best Home Exterior Transformation for “Legacy Exterior Transformation.”

“The clients behind these projects had been through incredibly difficult circumstances, and they trusted us to help them move forward,” says Jack Sorrentino, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Scroggs. “We listened closely, worked through each challenge, and helped make their homes feel comfortable again.”

Rebuilding After Helene

When Hurricane Helene struck Asheville in September 2024, a large tree fell onto the home of an older couple who care for their son with disabilities.

The impact damaged several roof trusses and parts of the exterior walls, leaving the house exposed to heavy rain. Water poured inside, damaging the primary bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room. The family had to relocate while repairs were underway, and finding temporary accommodations that worked for their son made an already difficult situation more complicated.

“This family had already been through enough,” Sorrentino says. “We wanted to get them back home as soon as we could.”

Scroggs repaired the roof and rebuilt damaged sections of the exterior walls. Inside, crews replaced water-damaged insulation, drywall, flooring, paint, and trim.

In the kitchen, the team carefully salvaged and reinstalled the cabinets and countertops. In the primary bathroom, they added a custom tile shower and new tile flooring, then refurbished and reinstalled the original vanity. Scroggs also coordinated the addition of a basement bathroom to improve accessibility and make the home more practical for the family in the years ahead.

The project earned the STARS Award for Best Whole Home Remodel Under $250,000. Fittingly named “Restoring Home, Restoring Hope,” it gave the family something they had been waiting for since the storm: peace of mind.

Picking Up Where a Dream Left Off

The second award-winning project began with a different kind of loss.

A husband and architect had been remodeling his family’s Asheville home when he passed away mid-construction. The family was left with his unfinished vision and a house that still felt more like a job site than a home.

As Scroggs studied the structure, it became clear that the original plans could not be completed as designed without exceeding the family’s budget. The team worked closely with the homeowner to develop a more attainable approach while preserving the elements that mattered most.

“This was her husband’s vision, so we took our time and listened,” Sorrentino says. “We wanted the finished home to still feel connected to what he had started.”

Before the exterior could come together, several structural problems had to be addressed. Scroggs removed a failing retaining wall and redistributed nearly 50 truckloads of soil to correct grading and drainage issues. Crews then removed the partially completed foundation and rebuilt the west gable wall, which had been improperly framed and posed a serious structural concern.

The team was also able to carry one important piece of the original remodel into the new design. Windows and doors purchased by the homeowner’s husband were still stored in their unopened packaging in the basement. Because they met current building codes, Scroggs reworked the plans to use them in new locations throughout the home.

“It felt right to find a place for those materials,” Sorrentino says. “They were part of the home he had pictured, and now they are part of the home his family gets to enjoy.”

With the structural work complete, Scroggs replaced areas of rotted and mismatched siding, installed new gutters, and created secure, permanent entrances to the basement and storage areas. A new covered front porch and connected multilevel deck completed the transformation, giving the family several places to gather.

The transformation earned Scroggs the 2026 STARS Award for Best Home Exterior Transformation.

Built for the People Who Live There

Although these projects began under very different circumstances, each called for steady communication, creative problem-solving, and respect for the people on the other side of the plans.

“Both projects came with challenges, and that made it especially important to listen to the families and understand what they needed from us,” Sorrentino says. “We are proud that the NCHBA recognized the work, and we are grateful these families trusted us to do it.”
